Quads

Just like Triads/Throuples, Quads can take many different shapes depending on the romantic and intimate connections between the four members. They require a lot of communication and emotional intelligence in order to manage the complexity of the relationship connections involved.

Core Features

  • Closed vs Open - a closed quad means all four partners are entirely exclusive to each other and do not date outside the group. An open quad means the four people for a core unit, but retain the freedom to pursue outside connections.
  • The Math Complexity - a full quad where all four people are involved with everyone else in the quad, contains 6-dyad relationships, plus an various triad relationships, as well as the overall group dynamic. Depending on the configuration of the inner relationships, these numbers may vary.

Common Configurations

The Double Date - two established couples meet, get along, and begin dating each other crosswise.

The Full Quad - all four people are romantically and intimately involved with everyone else in the group, in a highly integrated, egalitarian circle.

The Line Quad - A chain-like connection like a Zee or En form (pictured above)

Quad Advantages

  • Symmetrical Balance - unlike triads, the "two-against-one" dynamic during disagreements, is less likely to occur. This also provides a more obvious sense of equality - when one pair is out on a date, the other pair has the company of each other.
  • Resource Pooling - as with other types of polyamory, many quads choose to cohabitate, purchase property together, and even co-parent. The benefit of the ability to pool incomes together and split domestic labor, becomes much more obvious when four or more people are involved.

Sleeping Arrangements

One of the first big questions for Quads is the sleeping arrangements, especially if everyone is living under one roof. The logistics of this factor in many different variables and will obviously change from one Quad to the next. However, there are a few common concepts.

Rotating Schedule - some quads opt for a strict calendar rotation, allowing room for various relationship configurations to spend equal time with each connection.

Four Bedrooms - some quads prefer to maintain their own private bedroom, and connections can choose when to co-sleep as the desire arises. This ensures everyone has their own sovereign sanctuary to retreat to when needed.

Mega-Bed - the idea of joining two king-sized beds together to create one large oversized bed for everyone to share, may seem enticing for Quads, but will definitely need extra consideration when looking at sleep schedules, room temperature, and things like snoring.

The Cascade Effect

One of the biggest vulnerabilities Quads face is known as the Cascade Effect. Essentially, if one relationship begins to fracture, it often creates a cascading domino affect across the entire quad. With this in mind, Quads tend to require strict emotional containment, with each member knowing how to contain a conflict in one relationship without letting it bleed into another relationship.

Reflection

  • Am I treating every pairing as an independent relationship? Am I letting individual bonds wither by only interacting in group settings?
  • How do I practice emotional containment? If I am having problems with one partner, can I contain it and not allow it to bleed into my other relationships?
  • How will we manage financial equity? If we pool our incomes, do we keep track of contributions based on raw numbers, or are we valuing domestic labor, child care, and emotional labor equally?
