Polysaturated vs Polyfiedlity

Both of these describe situations where polyamorous relationships are not seeking new partners. Polysaturated is a logistical boundary of personal capacity, while Polyfidelity is a strict structural rule of mutual exclusivity.

Polysaturation

The philosophy of polysaturation recognizes that while a person's capacity to feel love may be unlimited, their practical resources need to maintain healthy relationships are not. It is not a permanent relationship label, and it can change based on life circumstances. Recognizing when you hit a saturation point is vital in maintaining healthy poly relationships, and ensures that existing partners do not face emotional neglect because one partner gets spread too thin.

Polyfidelity

Polyfidelity brings a traditionally viewed monogamous concept of "fidelity" to a multi-partner setting. It is a clear, negotiated, and foundational relationship agreement that prioritizes collective safety, and shared life-planning. Some people use the term "de facto polyfidelity" to describe a situation where the entire poly group becomes polysaturated at the the same time, however this situation occurs because the group lacks the bandwidth to add more, and not because the group is explicitly exclusive.

Reflection

  • Am I polysaturated because of my relationship or my life? If I feel to busy to date, is it because my current relationships are deeply entangled, or am I neglecting my boundaries around a demanding career, hobbies, children, or my essential need for solo recharge time?
  • Can I gracefully say "no" to a connection I really want? If I meet someone with instant chemistry but my schedule is completely full, do I have the maturity to say "I think you're amazing, but I am currently polysaturated and cannot offer you a fair and healthy relationship structure?"
  • How do I define "cheating" in a multi-partner circle? What constitutes as a breach of trust? Is intense emotional connection, digital flirting, or casual sex with an outsider treated with the same severity as in traditional monogamous relationships?
  • How do we handle unequal relationship health within our polyamorous group? If the bond between two partners is thriving, but the bond in a different relationship is struggling, how does our structure handle the asymmetry? Can we pause to repair individual relationships without closing the entire group?
